Job Overview and Responsibilities
As a Quality Engineer at Tesla, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality of our electric vehicles. Your primary responsibility will be to drive continuous improvement in process and product quality, working closely with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve issues. Your duties will include:
- Leading cross-functional problem-solving teams to drive process and product improvements
- Utilizing QA procedures to manage and facilitate issue resolution, including root cause analyses and the development, implementation, and monitoring of effective corrective and preventive actions
- Establishing and maintaining quality performance metrics
- Leading the Case team for Quality Association
- Performing technical root cause analysis of vehicle systems (full vehicle: interior, exterior, body, HV/LV, FW, Diag, Thermal)
- Coordinating and managing complex and constantly changing suspension system specifications and deviations
- Establishing and maintaining control plans and assessment criteria to ensure critical features are controlled through the assembly/production processes
- Driving regulation and corrective actions implementation into manufacturing line/design/supplier
- Leading/collaborating on review and disposition of discrepant materials identified for control of nonconforming product
- Promoting and maintaining a culture and attitude of continuous improvement, working within the Tesla team to make it more efficient, safer, and a more enjoyable workplace
Essential Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or a related field (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic, Power Hardware, Electronic, or equivalent applicable experience)
- Relevant experience in a similar role, preferably in the automotive or consumer electronics industry
- Explicit training and demonstrated results in applying quality problem-solving techniques, such as fishbone diagrams, FMEA, process capability analysis, hypothesis testing, DoE, SPC, etc.
- For entry-level candidates, participation in student competitions like Formula SAE, Baja SAE, or Solar Car is a plus
- A broad technical background with the ability to work with engineering, manufacturing, management, and suppliers across a wide variety of issues
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish effective working relationships inside Tesla and outside
- Outstanding problem-solving and failure analysis skills, with strong attention to detail and analytical thinking
- Ability to use tools and business system applications to survive, integrate, and interpret data
- Capacity and willingness to travel locally and internationally (5% to 10%)
- Must be self-motivated, able to handle multiple priorities, have a strong work ethic, and meet tight deadlines
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
While not required, the following qualifications and skills are preferred:
- Experience with electric vehicles or related technologies
- Knowledge of quality management systems, such as ISO 9001
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and techniques
- Experience with data analysis and statistical process control
- Strong programming skills, such as Python, C++, or MATLAB
- Experience with CAD design and simulation tools, such as CATIA or SolidWorks
