About This Role As a Staff Data Scientist I, you are a technical titan and a strategic force multiplier. You don't just solve problems; you anticipate them before they hit the roadmap. This role is for a visionary who can lead high-impact, cross-functional initiatives and provide the architectural guidance that keeps our entire department ahead of the curve. With a mindset of Extreme Ownership, you’ll bridge the gap between profound technical expertise and material business impact, serving as a role model for the engineering organization and a trusted partner to executive leadership. What You’ll Do • Lead Complex Initiatives: Form and lead cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact projects that move the needle for the entire organization. • Architect the Future: Provide architectural review and technical guidance at a departmental level, ensuring our Data Science assets are scalable and cost-effective. • Predict Stakeholder Needs: Anticipate business pivots and proactively identify opportunities where data science can solve future challenges. • Design Paved Roads: Engage the team in using reusable, supported patterns and establish organizational standards for code quality and security. • Own the Strategy: Influence the product roadmap and domain strategy using deep technical insights and cost-benefit analyses. • Master the Portfolio: Continually deepen and document the understanding of the company's entire technology portfolio to prevent silos. • Optimize for Efficiency: Propose strategic methodologies to tackle technical debt and refine team processes to increase overall delivery velocity. Who You Are • The Departmental Expert: You have 10+ years of relevant experience and are recognized as a go-to authority in quantitative research and model design. • The Strategic Partner: You partner closely with Product Management and other senior staff to ensure seamless end-to-end delivery of complex projects. • The Culture Carrier: You foster a "team vs. me" outlook, helping the whole department become more productive through high-level mentorship. • The Clear Communicator: You can articulate domain and department strategies to any audience and facilitate high-level architecture decision reviews. • The Principled Leader: You hold yourself and others responsible for major deliverables, driving excellence through influence rather than just authority. What You Bring • Advanced Cloud & Infrastructure: Profound experience with AWS and SageMaker, specifically in architecting cost-effective systems that perform at scale. • Domain Fluency: Deep familiarity with services in adjacent domains and proficiency in end-to-end development across monoliths and serverless environments. • AI Leadership: Ability to influence the selection and adoption of AI development tools and develop standards for validating AI-generated code. • Technical Guidance: Expertise in guiding others through complex research plans, experimental designs, and advanced model implementations. • Strategic Tooling: Mastery of Python and a track record of making the "final call" on technology choices that affect the multi-team roadmap. • Operational Wisdom: Experience leading cost-benefit analyses for large technical initiatives and optimizing for Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Physical Requirements • Stationary Position: Ability to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. • Data Entry: Repetitive finger motion to press keys and enter text or data into a computer by means of a keyboard. • Visual Clarity: Clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less (i.e., working with small objects or reading small print), including use of computer terminals and multiple monitors. • Auditory Communication: Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds (e.g., in-person speech, teleconferences, etc.).
