Our client, a prestigious arts institution in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US , seeks a dynamic and experienced Senior Lead Curator to oversee the conceptualization, development, and execution of groundbreaking modern art exhibitions. This pivotal role involves deep engagement with the museum's permanent collection, extensive research into contemporary art trends, and the identification of emerging artists and significant collections for acquisition and exhibition.
Responsibilities include:
Developing and implementing a strategic vision for the modern art exhibition program, aligning with the museum's mission and artistic direction. Conducting in-depth scholarly research on artists, movements, and themes relevant to modern and contemporary art. Curating and managing multiple exhibitions simultaneously, from initial concept to final installation, ensuring scholarly rigor and public engagement. Working closely with artists, collectors, galleries, and loan institutions to secure artworks and build strong relationships. Developing exhibition budgets, managing financial resources effectively, and seeking funding through grants and sponsorships. Writing catalogue essays, exhibition texts, wall labels, and other interpretive materials for public dissemination. Collaborating with education, marketing, and public relations departments to develop engaging public programming and promotional strategies. Mentoring and supervising curatorial assistants and interns, fostering a collaborative and productive team environment. Staying abreast of current scholarship and practice in modern and contemporary art through extensive reading, conference attendance, and travel. Contributing to the growth and refinement of the museum's modern and contemporary art collection through expert recommendations for acquisitions.
Qualifications:
Advanced degree (MA or PhD) in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or a related field with a specialization in modern or contemporary art. Minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible curatorial experience in a museum or gallery setting. Demonstrated success in conceiving, organizing, and managing major art exhibitions. Exceptional research, writing, and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and engagingly. Strong knowledge of art historical scholarship, critical theory, and the international art market. Established network of contacts within the art world, including artists, curators, dealers, and scholars. Proven ability to manage budgets, staff, and complex projects effectively. Experience with exhibition design principles and installation practices is a plus. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
