Scholar’s Tobacco Advocacy and Research (STAR) Program: Applications Open!
The STAR Program, a collaboration between the University of California, San Diego, and California State University, Dominguez Hills, is now accepting applications. Designed for individuals with limited research and advocacy experience, STAR provides hands-on training to advance understanding of tobacco use and its impact on public health.
Required twice monthly half day educational sessions will be hosted online from September 2026 to May 2027.
As a STAR Scholar, you will:
• Work with leading experts in tobacco research and policy
• Design, conduct, and present original research
• Contribute to impactful advocacy initiatives
• Explore social justice and health equity issues associated with the Tobacco Industry and related marketing practices.
• Attend national and international conferences, including the American Public Health Association and/or the American Thoracic Society conferences
• Receive a $30,000 stipend over one year
The program is open to California residents or students enrolled in California institutions. Applicants from diverse backgrounds, especially those new to research and advocacy, are strongly encouraged to apply.
