The Senior Geospatial Fire Analyst & Systems Analyst will bridge fire science, spatial analysis, and software development to model wildfire risks and enhance the Wildfire Risk product suite.
Responsibilities
- Model wildfire hazards and risks using various fire behavior software (IFTDSS, LANDFIRE, BEHAVE etc...) and GIS tools
- Edit and refine national fuelscapes, vegetation data, and canopy fuel layers
- Support the use of fire behavior analysis in a nationwide wildfire risk assessment
- Translate operational fire workflows into technical software user stories
- Work with developers to test and deploy the Wildfire Risk suite of datasets
Skills
- Degree (Equivalent work experience will be accepted in place of the education requirement)
- 5+ years in geospatial wildfire analysis, fire behavior modeling, or related technical skills
- Deep knowledge of surface/canopy fuel models and fire behavior simulation software
- Experience building software solutions, leveraging modern development tools and AI-assisted coding to accelerate delivery (experience with Java, Scala, or similar languages is a plus)
- Strong ability to translate business and technical requirements into scalable system designs, using AI to accelerate implementation
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL or other SQL-based database systems
- Experience working with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and the ability to design, query, and optimize data models with AI-assisted support
- Hands-on experience with Git or other version control systems
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and modern build/deployment practices
- Experience writing unit tests and using common testing frameworks
- Experience with spatial display and analysis with GIS software (QGIS, MapInfo Professional, ArcGIS, etc.)
- Familiar with using AI to support knowledge and market research
- Familiar with using AI to create technical requirements or similar
- FBAN or LTAN qualification preferred but not required
- Experience as a wildland firefighter working in fire behavior positions desired
