The role involves installation, operation, administration, and maintenance of various telecommunications systems, including Digital and VoIP Telephone Switches and Ethernet Switches.
Responsibilities
• Identify, research and resolve software and switch issues
• Use applicable interface devices and appropriate test equipment to monitor digital central offices and associated facilities
• Make decisions and take actions to ensure uninterrupted service
• Respond to system messages and associated alarms to determine the root cause of network problems and to take appropriate corrective action
• Analyze switch performance, system faults, customer reports, initiating corrective actions when necessary
• Perform routine testing both on site and from remote test facilities, sometimes coordinating with other departments, customers, and other interconnecting telco personnel
• Maintain technical documentation, office records, drawings, archived printouts, and site logs. Interpret and input complex software translation changes for system upgrades
• Perform preventative maintenance and database backups
• Install, configure and provision Remote and Central Office equipment
• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain Central Office equipment and wiring
• Install, repair, and maintain rectifiers and DC power plants to include battery plants
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Perform all associated installation, maintenance and testing on private line and special circuit equipment, digital access cross connect systems, T-carrier, fiber optic terminal and multiplexer equipment
• Install, align, and maintain line treatment equipment associated with data and analog circuits. Installation and maintenance of central office and customer premise equipment to include but not limited to: WAN/LAN Ethernet switches, routers, servers and VTC equipment, Satellite and base structure, Microwave, point to point, point to multi-point equipment
• Perform all line conditioning testing; along with end-to-end tests for installation of data transport equipment from the Central Office to customer premise, utilizing a variety of basic and complex test equipment and switch and system-based testing facilities to ensure proper installation and testing of new systems. Coordinate installation activities with all customers and departments to include manufacturers, if required, to a successful completion. Make cross-connect changes and re-arrangement on MDF’s, digital cross connect panels, and fiber distribution frames as required. Interpretation of engineering specifications, schematics, and drawings associated with AK Communications network and CPE installations
• Complete as-builds and track labor hours and cost of materials for all contract projects
• Manage and maintain schedules and costs for current construction projects
• Inspect and coordinate ongoing projects for wire-line, wireless, central office, and customer premise installations and modifications
• Provide customer service, troubleshooting, educate customers on available ACS products and services, provision and de-provision products and services. Answer customer inquiries
• Determine cable distribution to fulfill service requirements. Run, secure and terminate necessary cabling
• Place equipment cabinets, racks, or supporting framework. Accomplish all inter-cabinet wiring
• Install associated sets and sub-sets of business systems
• Install associated power equipment and make necessary distribution
• Install and provision system programming
• Perform all facets of fault location of PBX, PAX, Key, VoIP telephone or special circuits to restore degraded or out-of-service conditions
• Conduct system or sub-system testing as required to determine failures or to accomplish routine maintenance tests
• Perform preventative maintenance and database backups
• Install, maintain, and modify PBX and Key Systems
• Installation and configuration of vendor specific cards and equipment
• Routine minor tasks and repairs aimed at preserving the functionality, safety, and appearance of company-owned assets and facilities
• These responsibilities include patching small holes, tightening loose fittings, repairing or replacing minor fixtures, door handles, locks, and hinges; replacing light bulbs; replacing filters; and identifying and removing physical hazards, debris, or obstructions
Skills
• High school diploma
• Possess and maintain a driver's license
• Four (4) years training in a relevant telephone apprentice program or equivalent experience leading to journeyman level performance in this specialty
• Two (2) years' experience in the skills and work this position will typically perform
• External applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment suitability assessment
• External applicants must successfully pass either a DOT or non-DOT drug test, depending on position
• Network Technicians may be required to perform duties of a Field Technician, which may require a Medical Certification or a CDL
