Optomi, in partnership with a telecommunications client, is seeking a Planning Engineer to support a high-volume initiative focused on documenting and maintaining fiber network architecture. The role involves creating detailed architecture diagrams, validating inventory, and monitoring network capacity in GPON and XGS-PON environments.
Responsibilities
- Document and maintain GPON and XGS-PON network architecture using Microsoft Visio
- Create and update detailed network diagrams, including OLTs, splitters, cabinets, aggregation devices, access gateways, terminals, and related infrastructure
- Validate network inventory across multiple engineering and planning systems
- Monitor network capacity, thresholds, and utilization to identify potential exhaust conditions or infrastructure limitations
- Develop projects to address network capacity constraints, remediation efforts, upgrades, and decommissioning activities
- Maintain and update large volumes of network architecture diagrams and cluster maps as the network evolves
- Collaborate with network planners, engineers, and cross-functional teams to gather technical information and ensure documentation accuracy
- Utilize engineering and inventory management tools to research, validate, and maintain network records
- Learn and follow established planning standards, documentation processes, and engineering best practices
- Support additional network planning activities as needed, including edge planning efforts and customer-driven infrastructure requests
Skills
- 5+ years of telecommunications engineering, network planning, or related experience
- Strong understanding of fiber network architecture, including: GPON, XGS-PON, Optical Line Terminals (OLTs), Splitters, Distribution cabinets, aggregation devices, fiber access networks
- Experience creating and maintaining technical network documentation using Microsoft Visio
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical teams
- Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and quickly become productive in a fast-paced remote environment
- Experience supporting fiber access or broadband network deployments
- Background in Access Engineering or Outside Plant (OSP) engineering
- Experience with network inventory, engineering, GIS, or EMS platforms
- Previous experience performing network documentation, capacity planning, or edge planning activities
- Familiarity with telecom planning workflows and engineering best practices
