Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. International Justice Mission (IJM) is the global leader in protecting vulnerable people from violence around the world. They are seeking a Director of Finance & Accounting to provide overall oversight, strategy, and direction of US accounting and operations in support of IJM’s mission.
Responsibilities
- Direct a team of accountants and payroll staff, maximizing inter-team collaboration and communication, individual professional development and accomplishment of department and team objectives
- Lead the month-end and year-end close and reporting for the US Accounting and Operations with all monthly balance sheet reconciliations completed for the US entity
- Oversee US statutory and tax filings for 403(b) retirement plan audit (in conjunction with Global People Ops), 1099 reporting, W-2, workers’ compensation benefits, US tax exempt status for VA, TX, and DC, and required state tax registrations for US payroll
- Support and collaborate with the Statutory Reporting team on the Form 990 tax filing and annual external audit
- Serve as a key point of contact for financial information flow between US operations and Global Finance, keeping the Assistant Controller and VP of Finance apprised of concerns, issues, or discrepancies
- Serve as a key point of contact for IJM US staff to support accounting questions and operational needs
- Ensure the integrity of financial data included in IJM’s internal and external reports and annual financial audits
- Provide guidance and ensure implementation of effective and efficient policies, processes and internal controls within all US-based locations to safeguard IJM’s resources and mitigate risk
- Own the Workday financial operations process for US operations
- Manage onboarding processes for IJM expatriate staff and third country nationals related to compensation, including coordination with third party consultants to calculate tax equalization, hypothetical taxes and actual tax filings
- Maintain close relationships with senior leaders and collaborate across US divisions, including Human Resources, to support effective implementation of processes aligned with US regulations
- Develop and update accounting and finance policies and procedure manuals to ensure effective internal controls and compliance with internal policies and local, donor and regulatory requirements
- Assist the Statutory Reporting team with annual external financial statement audits
- Coordinate with the Global Revenue team on monthly transactions flowing through the US entity
- Direct communication with US and Global Finance teams regarding finance policies and reporting deadlines
- Identify training needs of direct reports and provide resources, coaching and mentoring to support continuing professional and spiritual growth
- Oversee document management related to US accounting transactions, tax documentation and US bank accounts
- Manage review and reporting of US payroll and tax-related expenses in accordance with GAAP to ensure accurate consolidation, reporting and audits
- Identify and recruit dedicated and qualified staff aligned with IJM’s mission and strategic goals
- Work closely with the Global VP of Finance and Assistant Controller to ensure organizational decisions support strategic objectives and effective execution
- Participation in IJM’s community of spiritual formation
Skills
- At least 8–10 years of experience as an accounting or audit manager, including five or more years in an international development environment and a minimum of three years supervising teams
- Superior knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, International Financial Reporting Standards and IRS regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations
- Experience with electronic financial and accounting systems and mid-level competency with Microsoft Excel or similar software packages

- Licensed CPA or advanced degree in accounting preferred but not required
