As the Lead Continuous Improvement Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the development of a design package that may include material flow diagrams, facility layouts, material handling equipment designs, automation designs, storage media designs, process designs, and slotting and pick path analyses.

What you’ll do on a typical day:
Collaborate with Data Analytics team to analyze client data (order profiles, slotting, velocity, SKU affinity, ABC) and identify opportunities to improve flow, labor efficiency, and space utilization
Translates data insights into practical, site-level actions by spending time in operations, observing workflows, and validating how the operation actually runs versus how it was designed
Conducts onsite operational assessments to identify inefficiencies in layout, flow, labor utilization, and equipment usage, and develops clear, actionable improvement plans
Designs end-to-end facility layouts, storage media, and material flow with a focus on scalability, flexibility, and the ability to continuously improve performance post go-live
Prepares engineering calculations and documents that define both the initial solution and future optimization opportunities across storage, capacity, zoning, and workflows
Supports business development by contributing to RFP responses, including identifying productivity improvement opportunities and long-term value creation for clients
Evaluates and compares manual and automated solutions, building ROI and payback models that incorporate both implementation benefits and sustained performance improvement
Leads detailed engineering for new business from concept through implementation, ensuring designs enable ongoing optimization and continuous improvement
Partners directly with operations leadership to identify, prioritize, and execute continuous improvement work focused on productivity, throughput, and cost reduction
Uses data, observation, and root cause analysis to diagnose performance gaps and implement corrective actions across labor, process flow, slotting, and equipment utilization
Facilitates joint planning sessions with clients and operations teams to align on performance gaps, improvement roadmaps, and evolving business needs
Builds and tracks KPIs (productivity, throughput, utilization, cost) and regularly reviews performance with operations teams to drive accountability and action
Supports WMS and system configuration to ensure solutions are flexible and can adapt to ongoing process changes and improvement initiatives
Manages material handling and automation vendors through installation and commissioning, ensuring systems meet performance expectations and improvement targets
Provides post-go-live support focused on stabilization, performance tuning, and identifying additional improvement opportunities across the operation
Acts as a hands-on change agent in the field, helping translate engineering solutions into executable processes with frontline teams
Mentors and develops junior engineers, reinforcing a mindset of ownership, field engagement, and continuous improvement
What you need to succeed at GXO:
At a minimum, you’ll need:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent related work or military experience
4 years of engineering experience in supply chain management, logistics, warehousing or a related field
Experience with Microsoft Office
It’d be great if you also have:
8-10 years of experience as an Industrial Engineer
Extensive AutoCAD experience
Ability to travel up to 50%
Time study measurement, such as MOST, a plus
Third-Party Logistics (3PL) experience warehousing, distribution center or fulfillment experience
Analytical
Project and resource management experience
