About the Role
As an Embedded Engineering Director, you will be responsible for leading a team that develops software for Apple's current and future embedded devices, including iPhones, iPads, AirPods, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. Your contributions will have a significant impact on the development of future embedded products, and you will play a critical role in shaping the direction of Apple's technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, challenge, and mentor a team of engineers to develop innovative solutions for Apple's products
- Create feature definitions, prototype new ideas, and develop plans to drive projects forward
- Report progress to leaders, recruit new team members, and develop existing team members
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Hardware, Software, Test, and Operations, to drive project success
- Develop, debug, and integrate new device drivers, protocols, and firmware code across Apple's embedded software offerings
- Manage a team of at least 5 software engineers working on various projects
- Maintain engineering relationships with vendors and contractors
- Provide support for hardware development builds locally and remotely (optional)
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Strong experience in C/C++ programming
- Excellent troubleshooting skills, particularly with tools like debuggers and logic analyzers
- Unix command line expertise and development experience on Unix, Linux, or Mac OS X
- Effective communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of standard hardware protocols (USB, UART, SPI, I2C, PCIe, MIPI, HDMI, DDR)
- 2-5 years of design experience and 1-5 years of design leadership experience
- BS/MS in CS/CE or applicable work experience
Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working on embedded systems and firmware development
- Knowledge of Apple's product development processes and technologies
- Experience leading high-performing teams and driving project success
- Strong understanding of hardware and software interactions
